Introduction and purpose

In a serious game, complex business relations of the professional world are modeled and simulated in a simplified way to explain the basic technical aspects and to demonstrate the general business mechanisms of the specific business sector (Romanov & Holler, 2021). The educational and promotional game — REWARDHeat Serious Game - models the heating sector and DH transformation. The game is supposed to bring up the issue of the transition to sustainable decarbonized low-temperature district heating. And such transition might be easier and quicker if public awareness, understanding and, consequently, acceptance of the technology is high. The game can be applied, as a part of a higher education study course; vocational education training; or a team building or networking event. The objectives of the game are to

  • Demonstrate a transition to a new generation of low-temperature district heating and cooling networks;
  • Integrate renewable and waste heat, available at low temperature
  • Simulate interaction between different stakeholders in the heating sector of a fictional town;
  • Simulate transformation of existing fossil fuel-based heating systems to sustainable systems;
  • Increase knowledge and raise awareness

The target groups for the game include:

  • Engineering students, economic and finance students;
  • Professionals from the energy and finance sectors, city planners, municipalities;
  • Everyone who is interested in energy and sustainability;
